Swedish Apple Pie
Ingredients:
3 to 4 medium apples (a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp works wonders), peeled, cored, and sliced
1 tablespoon sugar
1 ½ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
¾ cup melted butter (browned for extra depth)
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar (packed)
½ cup nuts (optional; toasted walnuts or pecans)
¾ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup almond flour (for that extra crunch)
1 egg
2 Tbsp buttermilk (or sour cream)
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Pinch of cloves or cardamom (optional)
Coarse sugar for sprinkling (optional)
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Prepare the apples: Toss your apple slices with 1 tablespoon of sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes to allow the apples to release their juices.
Brown the butter: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt and brown the butter until golden and nutty. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Mix the batter: In a large bowl, combine the browned butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, nuts (if using), both flours, egg, buttermilk, vanilla extract, salt, and optional cloves or cardamom.
Assemble the pie: Fill a buttered 9-inch pie pan ⅔ full with the apples. Spoon the batter evenly over the apples, covering as much of the surface as possible.
Optional finishing touch: Drizzle an additional 1-2 Tbsp of browned butter over the top and sprinkle with coarse sugar for added crunch.
Bake: Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown and delicious. Check at 40 minutes to avoid overbaking. The top should be golden, and the apples tender.
